Woodland sunflower and hairy sunflower (H. hirsutus) are very similar. They both occur in dry to mesic oak woodlands, deciduous forest edges, and in brushy edges along streams, fields, and roadsides. This species tends to occur on richer soil and is a bit larger, coarser, and more aggressive. It is useful for filling in woodland edges in plantings.
